Day 6: Ponte de Lima to Casa Romana

If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one.

Dolly Parton
Our daily miles so far - 24.4, 14.5, 19.7, 17.1, 14.9 and for today 21. Tomorrow looks like another 20 miles.

It rained last night for several hours but this morning we started out dry. It was the best day as far as scenery. We made a thousand foot climb up to a stone cross and down the other side to the river. We walked in the rain for about two hours, which worked out well because my Tilley hat needed a wash.

We decided to walk a little longer day to make it easier later next week. For the night or staying in a place called Casa Romano. I mentioned it in yesterday's post.

It is a small albergue with 18 bunks and one double room. We got the double room by meeting Reese on of the owners yesterday in a café in Ponte de Lima. We had a very nice communal dinner tonight pasta, salad, wine, and dessert. Tomorrow they serve a full breakfast at 7 a.m. so we can start out walking early. The entire place is run by donations only.

We are joined here tonight with 8 Germans, 1 Swede,  and 1 Canadian.  The workers are from Belgium, Germany and Portugal.

It is Friday here and on Saturday we will cross over the border into Spain. Portugal has been wonderful, so we will miss it. We had planned to stay in Tui on the border but we'll walk north for about 6 miles more. We are trying to get to Santiago on next Thursday for the Corpus Christi processions from the cathedral.
